MMS, Chlorine Dioxide and cancer

Miracle Mineral Supplement (or MMS) is a branded name for an aqueous solution of sodium chlorite, often promoted by testimonials rather than any research as a potential cancer cure; it’s time to clear up the facts.

MMS or Miracle Mineral Solution and cancer

I felt I had to cover this compound as I have seen a number of US patients recently claiming it gets rid of both cancer and Covid-19. They always ask if I’ve heard of it, because I’ve never written it up for the CANCERactive Website (writes Chris Woollams). So here goes:

What is MMS?

MMS is Sodium chlorite; a 28% Sodium chlorite solution in distilled water.

It is not Sodium Chloride (table salt) which some claim, nor is it Chlorine Dioxide. Yet.

Chlorine dioxide is produced by mixing the sodium chlorite solution with an acid, such as citric acid (lemon juice) or vinegar. Put simply, sodium chlorite needs to be ‘activated’ to produce Chlorine dioxide.

Jim Humble and MMS

A chap called Jim Humble found that his protocol, which produced Chlorine dioxide, cured malaria amongst his friends on a trip to South America in 1996. Humble claims to have then treated over 100,000 malaria cases in Africa, with specific claims of treating 2,000 cases personally and over 75,000 through those he trained. He also claims that MMS was used successfully in field tests by the Red Cross in Uganda, with a 100% success rate in curing 154 malaria cases within 24-48 hours (1).

MMS Chlorine dioxide also takes unwanted pathogens and parasites out of your body with great efficiency, but it provides absolutely no nutritional minerals or vitamins. Those are up to you.

Dosing for MMS

It has been frequently demonstrated that small doses administered often, up to once each hour, are more effective than large doses administered once or twice a day. Apparently, the Chlorine dioxide does not remain active in the body for long and is denatured to Sodium chloride (table salt). A maintenance dose is 6 drops a day of activated MMS for older people over 60, and 6 drops two to three times a week for younger people.

It is important to understand that chlorine dioxide in small doses in the body does NOT convert to chlorine. In fact, even industrially, it is used as a chlorine-free treatment, albeit a bleach (see below).

Claims of benefit for MMS are based solely on anecdotal reports - although there are a large number of these - and the self-published books (2) by Humble who went on to claim that Chlorine dioxide, used with DMSO, could cure everything from AIDS to cancer.  Presumably he’s a zillionaire by now.

It has been promoted on line as a cure for a wide range of diseases, including HIV, cancer, autism, and the common cold, but we really do need some reliable scientific evidence supporting MMS.

Adverse claims on MMS by Government bodies

Many claims about MMS are false. Chlorine dioxide is not used for swimming pools or as a bleach in homes. The major industrial use of Chlorine dioxide is in the bleaching of wood pulp, where it is a key component in elemental chlorine-free (ECF) bleaching sequences, responsible for about 95% of all bleached kraft pulp production worldwide. It is also used in the bleaching of flour, textiles, fats, oils, and cellulose, and in the cleaning and de-tanning of leather. Chlorine dioxide is also used in water treatment.

However, the Authorities are quite clear: This mixture is highly toxic and can cause severe health effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, low blood pressure, and acute kidney failure. The US Environmental Protection Agency sets a maximum level of 0.8 mg/L for chlorine dioxide in drinking water, but consuming MMS can result in exposure levels several thousands times higher.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has repeatedly warned consumers that drinking MMS is "the same as drinking bleach" and has advised the public to stop using it and dispose of the product immediately. Similar warnings have been issued by health authorities in the UK, Canada, Australia, Belgium, and other countries. But cancer patients still take it.

The Authorities also claim the toxic effects of MMS are well-documented; it can cause corrosive injuries to the gastrointestinal tract, and severe cases have led to death, including a Mexican woman who died within 12 hours of consuming it. The FDA has also taken legal action against vendors, including seizing large quantities of sodium chlorite and the hydrochloric acid that they claim is used to make MMS. They have also shut down websites selling the product.

Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, low blood pressure, acute kidney failure, methemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia, and even death.

In summary

Misinformation abounds especially from the people trying to shut down its use. However, this is not the same as Methylene Blue or Ivermectin or DMSO. This has zero research on it but a good number of testimonials. You choose!
