Fluoridation of water causes serious health negatives from increasing the risk of cancer and ADHD, to dumbing down IQs in Children and even weakening the thyroid, iodine levels and bone quality. On the positive side it appears to reduce cavities by 25%, although this is controversial.
Fluoride and Pregnant women
In the USA approximately 66 percent of people have Fluoride added to their drinking water according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In a Canadian Study (1), pregnant women from areas with fluoride added to their drinking water had more than twice the level of fluoride in their urine compared with women in non-fluoridated areas.
Toothpastes containing Fluoride have a panel on the pack which clearly states that if the person using the toothpaste swallows some toothpaste, they should report to a 'Health Control Center immediately'.
In our Sunday Show, Dr Elmar Jung, an holistic Dentist, stated that you should use a 'pea sized' amount on your toothbrush - that's all. This really raises questions, If Governments in Local areas are mandating fluoride in the water, the pregnant mother has little chance of avoiding it. The Fluoride is not treating the water - it is treating you, without your consent, and it's potentially toxic.
Fluoride lowers iodine and lowers thyroid function
In another Canadian study of almost 7 million adults (2), people in fluoridated water areas had poorer thyroid function. Even an exposure to low level fluoridation disrupted thyroid function.
It is known that fluoride lowers iodine in the body which has significant health implications. Iodine is essential in the production of thyroid hormone. People with iodine deficiency suffered even more in fluoride supplemented water districts (3). Almost one-in-five had significantly low plasma iodine levels.
Low iodine is linked to higher rates of cancer. It oxygenates cells, corrects metabolism, kills cancer cells, cancer stem cells and viruses around the cells. Low iodine is also linked to lethargy, higher BMIs and anaemia. We have a review on the importance of iodine and how a lack of iodine increases cancer risk.
Pre-natal fluoride levels and ADHD
A study from Mexico concluded that mothers who experienced higher levels of Fluoride, were more likely to have children with ADHD (4)
Fluoride lowers the IQ in Children
Fluoride is dumbing down children. In a meta-analysis (5) of 74 studies, the main finding was a significant inverse relationship between IQ and the level of Fluoride in the tap water. The more Fluoride, the lower average IQs.
Fluoride can damage your bones
Claims that fluoride added to water give children strong teeth and nones are often called into question. Certainly, for adults living in areas where there was excessive water fluoridation this doesn’t seem to be the case. In a study (6) using an ultrasonic bone quality marker, people in higher fluoridation areas had weaker bone quality. Previous studies just measured bone density.
Fluoride and Ntric Oxide
Nitric oxide (NO) is produced from nitrates by the oral microbiome. NO is essential for the elasticity of or arteries. Without NO, we develop high blood pressure, more cardiovascular events, and cognitive decline. NO production i our bodies starts in our mouth and proceeds in our epithelial tissues. Production peaks in our 30s and declines 10% per decade. Low NO is linked to aging.
Research indicates that fluoride exposure disrupts nitric oxide (NO) homeostasis, though its effects vary by context and dosage. In oral hygiene contexts, fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash are cited as antiseptics that kill oral bacteria essential for converting dietary nitrates into nitric oxide, potentially reducing systemic NO levels and cardiovascular benefits. In a study to determine if excessive exposure to fluoride could suppress the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), it was found to be true and lowered NO was even found in the umbilical vein (7)
Fluoride and Teeth
Fluoride was added to water supplies to strengthen developing teeth by strengthening tooth enamel and preventing cavities. Cavities are actually caused by bacteria sticking to the surface of the tooth through plaque. The bacteria feed on sugar in the mouth and produce an acid that causes a hole in the tooth. Fluoride is believed to strengthen the enamel before and after damage. In the first areas where Fluoride was added to water, it was done so because it was estimated that the fluoride would reduce cavities by 50%. Recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses have confirmed that water fluoridation substantially reduces the prevalence and incidence of dental cavities in primary and permanent teeth (8).
However, the American Academy of Pediatrics have Fact Checked this and say it is 25% (9).
